Workshop with Jasmine Star {Atlanta Wedding Photographer}

During Thanksgiving 2013, my aunt asked me a question.

If you could sit next to anyone in the world on a 10 hour flight, who would it be?”

That was an easy one. On my nightstand was a magazine that I had read cover to cover for inspiration on building a wedding photography business. I had taken it with me on a my flight home to Cleveland that year.

Jasmine Star.”

I had answered without reservation or pondering. I knew I needed to hear the wisdom that she had to share about the experiences and love she has for photography. I did not know that 7 months down the road, I would be hearing that wisdom from both her and JD, not on a plane, but sitting among friends at dinner.

Fast forward to April 2014. Matthew emailed me to quickly check my email. I had received confirmation that I would attend a one day workshop in Atlanta with 19 other area photographers. I couldn’t believe it. My first summer that I was going to spend in Atlanta (I was moving in the summer) and I would get the opportunity of a lifetime?! It seemed unreal. I fan-girled a bit and squealed, but then I knew that this would be the start of something new and exciting and prepared myself for all the learning that would ensue.

On that July day, the weather was HOT, but inside the Decatur Courthouse, the marble room cooled us all as the morning got underway. I had one brief moment of “I do not belong here” as I was face to face with inspirational and established photographers, but that soon diminished as I realized how FAR I had actually come. I belonged there, to stand among giants.

The whole day I had a smile on my face and a pen in hand (and a camera in the other!). I learned so much about how to establish better communication with brides and couples, reach out to local businesses and vendors, and little ways to get our business seen. It was eye-opening. I realized our struggles with creating our business and wedding photography brand, we were not alone. Matthew and I knew that we were already photographing together and knew we needed to rebrand ourselves, but this was the ¬†push we needed. To be around talented individuals who were passionate about their craft was such a blessing and I will forever count that day as a stepping stone toward our “Peach and Oak” brand (still working on it, everyday!)

To Jasmine and JD, Matthew and I thank you so much for being such an inspiration and being available to speak with even the “newest” of photographers and imparting your knowledge onto them.
